butter, Café in Bockenheim feels like a quiet pause in the brisk rhythm of Frankfurt life, especially suited for those who appreciate solid coffee and thoughtfully crafted pastries. Located on Konrad-Broßwitz-Straße, this café draws a mix of locals who swing by for a morning pick-me-up or settle in for a relaxed weekday brunch without breaking the bank or the clock.

One of the defining features of butter is its focus on bakery highlights like canelé and sourdough, which come across as artisanal without being overly precious. The canelé, in particular, regularly gets nods for its caramelized crust and tender interior, making it a popular choice when it’s available. Alongside, the matcha latte represents the kind of careful beverage that pairs well with the simple, hearty pastries on offer.

The atmosphere leans toward casual and unpretentious, with an understated aesthetic that fits neatly in the creative, student-rich Bockenheim neighborhood. It’s a spot where conversations hum quietly rather than shout, and many come prepared to either catch up with friends or delve into a book. However, the layout and ordering system deserve a moment’s attention: patrons order at the counter, which can confuse first-timers accustomed to table service, so knowing this upfront smooths the visit.

Service here tends to be polite but somewhat reserved, which might suggest a spot more focused on the craft behind the scenes than on warm small talk. The occasional busy periods, especially weekends, can lead to longer queues, meaning if you want the best chance for speedy seating and service, weekday visits—mid-mornings or early afternoons—are advisable.

Visitors who appreciate thoughtfully prepared bread and pastries with a reliably good espresso or specialty coffee will find butter a fitting stop. It’s not the place for a lively group hangout or an extended stay with table service. Instead, it suits those who like to enjoy quality bites and drinks in a simple yet thoughtfully curated environment, reflecting Bockenheim’s calm but creative spirit.

Very nice place in Bockenheim. It seems from other reviews that sometimes waiting time to enter can be very long, when I was there it was not the case. I got Butter mit Brot and my wife Musli. Butter was very good, salty and creamy and sourdough bread was nice as well , Musli were even better with grated pistachio on top. Service was nice but they have to write or warn people to order at the counter, we didn’t know and we waited 5 minutes for someone to come. I am not sure I would wait 45 minutes to enter but if there is no line I highly recommend it.

Excellent bread with brunch, decent coffee and a very nice aesthetic, only the staff are not the most welcoming and it is not clear whether you order at the table or at the counter (you order at the counter!).
